I know….they don’t look like they belong in a test kitchen…..but they are sparkling!
My pinterest test idea was this:
To clean burners on your range:
Put burners into a trash bag and add ammonia….did that….
No one told me the trash bag would leak, so just before I passed out from the fumes, I noticed the puddle of ammonia spreading out over my countertop. I put on some gloves, grabbed paper towel and cleaned it up. Now my countertops are super clean. I put the whole trash bag with burners into another trash bag, sealed them and put everything in my recycle bin to wait.
Early this morning, I opened up the bag, and the ammonia again assaulted my senses. I poured everything down the sink, and began scrubbing the burners. No need. They were absolutely spotless and non-greasy. I put them on the stove and voila!

Last night I wanted to make something special for my hubby, because I am going to be out of town next week, so I fired up the old computer, called up Pinterest and clicked on the first recipe that caught my eye. I loved the fact that these bars were simple to make, used a vanilla cake mix, which, in my pantry will be gluten free, since I have celiac disease, and I liked the name.
In Texas, when I was a teen, living in the country and cooking for my mom, dad and brother on a Sat. night, instead of “cruising the drag” with the other high school kids, I became quite skilled at making chess pie. It is a basic custard pie with a distinctive flavor. These bars taste quite similar, but they have a cake mix crust and a vanilla/cream cheese flavor.
To make this recipe gluten free, substitute the vanilla cake mix for a Duncan Hines gluten free vanilla mix, and make sure to buy gluten free vanilla.
We loved the crunchiness of the cake mix “crust”, so I think I will doctor it a bit at Christmas time, adding cherry pie filling or nuts to make the recipe more festive.

When I was a young wife and mother of four young sons, the telephone that was bound to my kitchen wall and the television that was centered in our livingroom were the main sources of all of my information about cooking, childrearing, crafts, sewing and the like. I spent many hours tethered to the long cord that curled its way obediently behind me as I kept an eye on the kids while finding out how to make Roman blinds from my friend Barbara, who was a craft expert. Or I turned on Good Morning America and watched Joan London and Julia Childs struggle through intriguing recipes together. I hardly ever actually used information gleaned over the phone or TV waves. Once in a while I read magazines to learn how to do something new, but mostly I depended on older women, my friends, my mom, aunts or grandmother’s experiences. And a lot of what I cooked and how I organized my home was based on memories from childhood homes.
Then the internet descended upon us and life and information changed forever. It was as if everything I didn’t know I wanted and needed were served to me in a never ending cycle of ideas and experiences. Sorting through it all was the first problem, and then judging which ideas would work for me was the second. Seldom do I pick up the phone and ask a friend what she is serving for dinner. I usually sign on to Facebook and see what my friends are posting about dinner, and if nothing is interesting there, I click on Pinterest and seldom fail to find at least ten menu suggestions there. The ones I gravitate toward are those accompanied by comments such as: I tried this recipe and my family gobbled it up. I like tried and true. Think of me as an aunt or grandmother who shares with you here, the ideas that worked for me….and those that didn’t, and not just on cooking. I will be sharing all of my pinterests!
